I love animals and have grown up with lots of pets. We have had cats and lots of kittens, lots of guinea pigs, a tortoise, a dog etc. The dog died a little over a year ago and I miss him so much . At the moment I have just one pet, a guinea pig named Princess . But I'm going to get a new dog . Do you have any pets?

I have had lots of pets over the years - mostly guinea pigs (Squeaky, Bubbles and Dieselbelle)and rabbits (Dandelion, Hoppy and Clover), although I've also had two hamsters called Alfred and Blizzard and many, many different creepy crawlies including a millipede called Tickle (!) snails (garden, banded and Giant African Land), Madagascan Hissing Cockroaches and stick insects. I only have two guinea pigs at the moment though - Sparkle and Splodge. Here is a photo I took recently of Splodge kissing Sparkle! I hope we can have another dog one day. My Mum's last dog (Nimrod) died back in 1997, and we currently live in an area with no nice parks, so it wouldn't be fair to have one here . We should be moving house early next year though, so I'm hoping we will have a new addition to the family very soon !

I love your cats, Tokala! Rusty is so cute! My Mum doesn't like cats, but I plan to have some when I leave home ! And Princess is beautiful too, The Loner! It's unusual for a guinea pig with some black patches on her fur to have ruby-coloured eyes like hers, isn't it? I don't think I've ever seen that before. Generally, I only see plain white ones with ruby eyes! Maybe Sparkle is related to one of your old guinea pigs! That would be funny! Splodge was quite ill a few weeks ago, and had to be taken to the vets since he wasn't eating . They realised that he had some food trapped around his teeth, but when they removed it both of his bottom front teeth fell out, so now he has to have his top teeth trimmed every three weeks because they don't grind down enough - he doesn't like that at all ! It also means that all of his food has to be cut up really small, which takes a long time...but he's worth it !

Aww, I'm sorry to hear that about Splodge. I hope he will be well again soon!
Yes, Princess is unusual in her colors. Actually she's not black but a really dark brown which is lighter at the roots. I had never seen a guinea pig like her before. I had also only seen red eyes on all white guinea pigs and never dark red eyes like she has. She is very different from all the other guinea pigs I have had. Her hair is also about twice as long as an ordinary short hair.

Sorry about the mix-up over black and brown LOL! She must look very much like my Mum's first ever guinea pig, Torchy, then, although I unfotunately never knew that guinea pig. (She passed away a whole 26 years before I was born!!!) Her fur sounds about the length of my first guinea pig, Squeaky's too! Maybe all of your guinea pigs are somehow related to ours!

Don't worry about the color mix-up. In some lightings she does look black. Wow, that would be crazy if our guinea pigs were related but you never know . Princess isn't related to any of my previous guinea pigs, at least not to my knowledge! Most of my other guinea pigs were related and went back to my brothers first guinea pigs. We bred them for fun . I think Princess may be a mix of short hair and long hair. I don't know much about pure bred guinea pigs and wouldn't know what breeds she then is a mix of. When she was a baby I thought she would grow a real long coat, but her coat never grew any longer, she just grew larger . But then there's less fur care .

I have one dog who I'll brag more about later, undoubtedly : 0-P But he's a nine-year-old rescued Chinook dog (who's featured in the top right picture here--he's got a bit more white frosting his muzzle and lost a lot of weight since then, lol), my second dog and the first dog I've had who's truly mine. Chinooks are my favorite breed--and yes, I know he looks like a mutt X 0-) They all kinda do. On the whole Chinook breeders really seem to emphasize temperament, health, and working ability over mere uniformity of appearance--score! Of course, I don't know about my dog's breeder... I don't have a lot of respect for her from the very little I know, which is that I've got one of her dogs (I'm his fourth home) who came with temperament, health, and conformation issues and I still haven't ever heard from her. She had no "return to breeder" clause in his contract, something good breeders should have if they really care about the dogs they breed... : 0-/ (A longtime humane society volunteer who's seen many, many wonderful dogs killed and an aspiring breeder myself, I', very picky about animal breeding. It's not the humans who end up suffering most, even dying if humans aren't careful enough in their breeding of animals...) Oh well. Jack's healthier and better adjusted now, though getting old, and he's definitely got a home for life with me. I think he knows it, too : 0-) He graduated from beginning and intermediate obedience at the top of his class, no longer growls at random strangers, and, instead of bolting and running away as he used to be prone to doing, is now actually very attached to me, and tries to insist I stay where he can see me, always. I've gotten compliments on his behavior from strangers, heh, and though he's a little too clever for his own good sometimes (I love intelligent dogs; they know how to make trouble X 0-) ) he's overall very trustworthy and tries hard to do as I ask...at least most of the time ; 0-) We still need to work on his distraction-proofing some more! Anywho, until recently I had a pair of pet rats, but both got old and died as of last Thanksgiving--my favorite of a very traumatic and sudden onset of pneumonia x.x;; Poor girl. She was so good about taking her medicine and being handled, too; such a wonderful rat. Before that I had many gerbils, with Radar and her daughter Titanic being the main two. There was also a malmute mix dog I grew up with... but those are all the pets I've had, thanks to so many years of moving around (and it took, what, fourteen years? to convince my parents to let me get the gerbils!)... I certainly haven't had as many animals as I'd like to, having always been an animal lover, and very jealous of all my friends who had loads of pets, or even just a more active dog than my elderly mal-mix! You guys are lucky, to have so many awesome-looking pets ; 0-) *pets the wheekers* --Right now I'd like to get more pet rodents, maybe gerbils again or some mice. Actually, I'd like to get just about everything, but with vet school coming up I'm trying to limit my options to something more practical--for sure no birds or horses 'til I'm out of vet school! And...aww, sorry to hear about your guinea pig's troubles, Lancer. What is it you feed them, by the way? I worked in the exotics ward at the vet teaching hospital here two summers ago, where we saw a good number of guinea pigs--a lot of them end up getting tooth problems, actually, if they're not fed mainly on the right sort of hay.

Tinka - all of your pets are gorgeous! Chance looks exactly like my Grandad's old dog, Argus. In fact, Chance could be Argus re-incarnated.
Bryndel - I'd never even heard of the Chinook. It's about time that I went to Crufts Dog Show again! They sound like lovely dogs though, and Jack is simply adorable. I certainly wouldn't be complaining if he decided that my bed was his own, or even if he squashed a couple of my ponies!!!
As for the guinea pigs, Sparkle and Splodge are given a pet shop's own brand of hay which was recommended to us by a guinea pig expert, and as a special treat, they sometimes get a handful of "Timothy Hay" to eat. They have a top brand of mixed dry food that's supposed to have added vitamin C for their breakfast, and a range of vegetables and fruit in the evenings. In fact, they're sitting next to me on the living room floor right now eating their supper, and Splodge, luckily, doesn't seem to be suffering with his teeth. He finds it difficult to eat carrots nowadays, but that's about all.
Sparkle recently developed a large lump on his side. Not being very knowledgeable in these things, I took him to the vet worried that it might be the beginning of cancer, but we were told it was a cyst, and the vet simply squeezed the puss out, and it's now gone down. We were told to take him back if it gets as large as a jellybean, or we can do it ourselves...I'm afraid of hurting him though - any ideas if it would be safe to do it at home as our vet said, or if we should take Sparkle back should it grow bigger again?
