One day in late May 2002, a girl by the name of Desiree Skylark and her parents rolled out of their beds at 3am, all ready to go out on an organised walk to listen to the dawn chorus.
They had a great time, and even once it was finished, it was only 6am, so they were still early enough to go to a car boot sale.
The day promised to be a hot one, which put a lot of stallholders off. Just as rain annoys people who must stand behind a table for several hours, the sun can do just as much damage. Hence, the small school car boot sale was even smaller than usual, and there were no ponies there...at least, it seemed.
Desiree was very disappointed, as she rounded the last corner, and saw just one "table" - actually a dirty white van with bags of broken glass and other unsavoury things all around it. A big, fat, sweaty man sat in the back of his van, heckling at people, begging them to buy his horrible stuff. Desiree sighed, and was just about to turn back towards the car, when she spotted something sticking out of a bag - a tuft of yellow hair! She saw at once that it was a fakie pony, sitting atop many others...
She hastily dug through the bag of ponies, which made her feel sick, since they were dirty and smelled musty... But she was determined to save any MLP's who may be lurking inside. First she found a Baby Half Note with no tail, and then a Baby Yo-yo with a haircut and pink highlighter for lipstick...
But what she came across next shocked her. A little yellow ceramic pony who looked identical to Baby Explorer (Same pose, with the same coloured real hair, even the same markings on her hooves...but she was porcelain!) Desiree grabbed the little Baby, and continued to dig through the bag. She saw lots of fakies that she had never heard of before - maybe from further afield than the UK - but she didn't pick them up. Suddenly she saw something that made her gasp aloud!
A yellow eye gleamed, and Desiree saw a very peculiar creature looking up at her. She tried to cover it up, but the creature refused to look away. It had Desiree within its gaze now, and would not give up until it got her full attention. Desiree spotted one more pony - Speckles, who had matted hair and was also covered in pink highlighter, like her sister, Yo-yo. She grabbed the Baby, and tried to leave the bag as quickly as she could... But however hard she tried to ignore it, she could feel a second yellow eye staring into her soul...
Hurriedly, she turned away, and asked how much the four ponies would cost. The horrible-looking man in the back of the van walked over to her, and said in a very common voice,
"Ya can't only buy fo-w-ur a them ponies! The 'ole bag goes together, know what I mean?"
Desiree looked in horror at the bag, and realised that to get the little ceramic Baby Explorer, she would have to buy the strange creature that came along with her. And being a Rescue Home, she couldn't even get rid of it once it came into her possession! The creature grinned, menacingly, still showing both of its yellow eyes, no matter how Desiree tried to hide it!
Having paid 2.00gbp for the whole bag, Desiree handed it to her father to carry, and just carried the four MLP's loose in her hand. She was prepared to let the bag stay in the front of the car, so long as she didn't have to see the "creature" again. But her Dad placed it on the seat next to her in the back of the car. Desiree smelled the horrid musty scent of the fakies, and sucked up her courage to pick up the yellow-eyed monster and put it face down in the bag...
Feeling a little calmer, she tried to keep her attention on the MLP's she'd bought, while her mother took a look through the bag of smelly fakies.
Having seen the yellow-eyed creature for the first time, her mother crooned, "This is a good fake!" Desiree muttered something about her fear of it, but her mother just laughed. "I'll keep her if you don't want her - I think she's funny! Look at it's legs - it's just like a pig!"
As it happened, Desiree got used to the sight of the pig-pony, and began to fear it a little less, but still felt a bit creepy when it was round, so the "good MLP fake" was put at the bottom of a box of Remco's and Lanard's, and the poor thing's owner tried to forget it...
But pig-pony waited for the day when she could get revenge...or at least, recognition!
A couple of years later, Desiree saw another fake of pig-pony's kind, this one was green with orange hair, and in much nicer condition ~ for just 50p! Her Mum wanted to buy it, but Desiree still remembered her fear of the yellow eyes, and the strange thin legs, and refused...
How she would live to regret that day!
On a cold, windy night in September 2005, Desiree battled her way to an internet cafe, and lurked on the UK My Little Pony Convention's forum. She had no means of signing up, with no e-mail address, nor her own computer! But she could read the pages of pony fun, and she saw a topic posted by Escarchita about her magnificent Spanish pony collection, some of which she would be taking to the Convention along with her friend, Snow. Desiree saw a group of strangely-familiar ponies, and finally realisation dawned on her!
Fakie pig-pony was NOT A FAKE at all!
Fakie Pig-Pony was Perla, the Piggy Pony - a rare, Spanish MLP!!!
The second that Desiree returned home, she threw open her cupboard door, and brought the poor pony out into the light at last. Now that Perla had a name, she didn't seem half so scary any more. Desiree apologised to the little pink equine, and washed and groomed her until she was in tip-top condition...well, not quite. Perla will never be in good condition, what with rubbed symbols, missing eyelashes, rusted eyes (which were what scared her young owner in the first place!), and blue felt tip stains on her neck...but one thing was certain. Even though Desiree had kept Perla in a box for so many years, those days were over now...
Perla smiled a smile, which only pig-pony's can smile, and wore her golden Rescue Home celebrity ribbon with pride - from now on, she would be loved, and maybe one day her story would be told outside of the Rescue Home. And that's how you've made one little pony's dream come true by reading her tale.
"You can never judge a book by it's cover" is her catch-phrase, and I think that, judging by this story, everyone will have to agree that statement is very true indeed.
